摘要

The white-haired man sitting quietly in row two, inside the world's largest building, was undoubtedly the star on this Sunday morning in February. People were asking for his autograph, took photos with him, or simply gave him a thankful pat on the shoulder. "Without Joe Sutter, this building wouldn't be here today," said Boeing Commercial Airplane CEO Jim Albaugh in front of 10,000 employees, customers and media, assembled in the huge factory hangar in Everett, Seattle. He explained that in 1966, aircraft engineer Joe Sutter, now 89 years old and still going strong, had a choice of job offers at Boeing in Seattle or McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, California. Luckily for Boeing, he opted for Seattle and soon became known as the 'father of the Jumbo Jet', ensuring that the extraordinary project that created the world's then biggest aircraft overcame a huge array of difficulties. His team was called 'The Incredibles'.
