Lockheed Martin held a ceremony at Marietta, Georgia, on March 29 for the roll-out of the MC-130J Combat Shadow II. The commander of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), Lt Gen Donald C Wurster, was the keynote speaker at the event. AFSOC will acquire MC-130Js to replace its MC-130P Combat Shadows, which are being used to support special operations helicopters infiltrating hostile territory. Based on the KC-130J, it flies further, higher and faster than the MC-130P and also requires a smaller standard crew of five, rather than eight.
