On May 2 the Royal New Zealand Air Force held an introduction to service ceremony for the Lockheed P-3K2 Orion at Whenuapai Air Force Base, Auckland. The first example of the maritime patrol aircraft upgraded under Project Kestrel (NZ4204) arrived back at Whenuapai on April 23. Following the ceremony, it will undergo a period of operational testing and evaluation to enable the crews to develop procedures to maximise the potential of the new systems installed. All six of New Zealand's P-3Ks will be upgraded to improve their intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, while navigation and communication systems have been modernised and a 'glass cockpit installed. As additional aircraft are redelivered to No.5 Squadron it will transition from the Maritime Patrol Force to the Airborne Surveillance and Response Force, underlining the additional roles assumed by the fleet.
