Fighter manufacturers had until September 26 to submit their proposals to meet the Japan Air Defense Force's requirement for a Mitsubishi F-4EJ Kai Phantom replacement. The F-X programme calls for 40 aircraft to enter service around 2015/2016. A request for proposals was issued on April 13 and a decision is expected by early 2012. Boeing and the US Navy offered the F/A-18E Super Hornet Block II, stressing guaranteed pricing and delivery timelines, and low-risk. BAE Systems, on behalf of the Eurofighter consortium, and in conjunction with the Japanese trading company the Sumitomo Corporation, has submitted a version of the Typhoon. It has offered licensed production of the aircraft in Japan, as well as access to software source codes and other data to allow it to control manufacture, support and upgrade by industry locally.
