The Northrop Grumman X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) aircraft retracted its landing gear and cruised for the first time on September 30. The flight was undertaken from NASA's Dryden Research Center at Edwards AFB, California, and according to Northrop Grumman, "helped validate precision navigation hardware and software that will allow the X-47B to land on the moving deck of an aircraft carrier." The flight was also the first opportunity to assess the X-47B's handling in clean configuration. Further trials wilt follow that will test the aircraft's handling "under a variety of altitudes, speed and fuel load conditions," according to the company. The milestone was reached after trials eartier this summer that saw a F/A-18D Hornet land on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69) using software due to be carried by the X-47B, validating the unmanned aircraft's systems in the aircraft carrier's environment (see X-47B Software Demo, August, p25). Land-based earner simulation testing wilt start next year at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, ahead of real carrier launch and recovery trials due to begin in 2013.
