摘要

Decades ago, airpower was primarily seen as the product of fighter and bomber aircraft. Both were seen as pillars to the allied command of the air in 1945. Both types are part of a far more technologically sophisticated approach to air war today but, while the future is often said to belong to unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and missiles, the US armed services are still investing heavily in another generation of fighter and bomber aircraft. However, the missions that each type carries out and the force structure in which they are organised are significantly different. US Air Force bombers have seen much combat since the end of the Cold War. In 2011, 76 50-year-old B-52Hs, 66 (proposed to be reduced to 60) 25-year-old B-1 Bs and 20 10-year-old-plus B-2s are operationally active, with B-2s flying combat sorties over Libya and B-1 Bs and B-52s over Afghanistan. Despite the likelihood of large-scale cuts in US defence spending in the near future, the USAF has increased its priority to develop a next-generation bomber (that would enter service around 2025) while at the same time continuing to improve the capability of current bombers.
