THE US Navy recently announced that its first MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft systems have arrived at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam for initial deployment in the Pacific theatre. Two will be operated and maintained by Unmanned Patrol Squadron (VUP) 19 as part of an early operational capability to further develop the concept of operations and fleet learning for maritime high-altitude, long-endurance systems. The fleet will expand to four aircraft to achieve initial operational capability and will be capable of 24/7 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. The US Navy stated "multi-sensor mission payloads" will provide "persistence, capability and capacity" to complement the P-8A Poseidon manned maritime patrol aircraft.
