Elbit Systems flew the first Hermes 900 medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned air vehicle (UAV) on December 9, 2009. The prototype (4X-USN) was airborne for 15 minutes at Kizot in the Negev Desert in southern Israel, taking off and landing in strong winds. The new UAV builds upon the experience gained with the Hermes 450 and its existing infrastructure, but at 1.1 tons at take-off is more than twice as heavy. It is 27ft 3in (8.3m) long and has a wingspan of 49ft 2in (15m). A payload weighing up to 661lb (300kg) can be carried - the modular design of the under fuselage bay means that sensor packages can be changed quickly. Power comes from a single Rotax 914 engine modified for high-altitude unmanned operations.
