Nestled between the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea, Romania experienced the fall of the lron Curtain in 1989 along with many other former Eastern Bloc countries, and joined the European Union in 2007. Unfortunately, despite these achievements, many people still only think of Count Dracula or former dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu when Romania is mentioned, rather than an up-and-coming European neighbour with rich cultural and natural benefits. This is because the state of 22 million people, slightly smaller than the United Kingdom, has been cordoned off from the rest of the world for far too long, and only since 2002 have Romanians been allowed visa-free European travel. At the same time, the average per-capita income in Romania, of less than US $8,000 per annum, is only one quarter of that in the UK.
