The US Air Force is making its largest number of shifts of aircraft since the Cold War. The changes announced on July 29 affect 650 aircraft and 12,000 airmen. Supporters say they'll achieve economies by consolidating aircraft fleets, rnbut the changes also had plenty of critics. The US air arm now has fewer personnel than it did on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. US airmen are flying and maintaining a geriatric fleet of the oldest aircraft they have ever operated. Rather than enhancing efficiency and economy, one observer said, the changes amount to 'rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic'.
