Perhaps it is because the life of an RAF Airman is considered to be less 'sexy' than that of aircrew - and hence not as commercially attractive to readers - that there has been a conspicuous lack of books from engineer conscripts. Thankfully, Ron Swain has redressed the balance in this excellent recollection of his two years as a National Serviceman. Ron has delved into the diaries he kept at the time, which contain an enormous amount of detail, one example being the notes he made while he was with 148 Squadron, in which he recalls he was "assigned to look after Avro Lincoln B2/IVA RE347". He is also able to list the other seven Lincolns on the squadron's charge during his term of service as RA667, RA673, RE357, RE397, RF565, SX983 and SX987.
