This isn't the first time that No 31 Squadron, known as the 'Goldstars', will have flown over the mountains of Afghanistan; 90 years ago its Bristol Fighters escorted Victoria transports during the third Anglo-Afghan War and the evacuation of Kabul. It was a short chapter of extensive Middle-Eastern operations between the two World Wars, but history has come full circle as the squadron embarks on its first four-month tour of duty on Operation Herrick.
