The US Department of Defense (DoD) released its new draft request for proposals for the KC-X programme on September 25. KC-X seeks 179 aerial refuelling tankers to begin the process of replacing the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker and augment the airlift fleet. A contract will be awarded in the summer of 2010 and it will be followed by a fixed price incentive contract for the development phase. Five production lots will be acquired on a firm fixed price basis, with the programme expected to be worth approximately $35 billion (£21.7 billion).
