At a ceremony held at Fort Myer in Virginia, the Army National Guard officially retired the Bell UH-1H Iroquois, universally known as the Huey from its original HU-1 designation. The helicopter was first fielded by the Army in 1956 as a replacement for the Sikorsky CH-34 Choctaw. It played a vital role in the development of the US Army's air mobility concept and will forever be remembered for the part it played in the Vietnam War, where nearly half of the 15,000 produced served. Around 1,500 examples were assigned to the Guard.
