Sidney Camm was noted for his success in designing several generations of outstanding piston-engined fighters that culminated in the Hawker Sea Fury. Late in World War Two he turned his attention to the possibility of using the new Rolls-Royce Nene jet engine to power a 'Fury replacement' fighter. A series of design studies resulted in the P. 1040, which was offered to the Ministry of Aircraft Production's Directorate of Technical Development in September 1945. The resulting fighter was an elegant aircraft that had a number of innovative design features and which proved to be a delight to fly - a true 'pilot's aeroplane'.
