It may come as a surprise to many that one of the world's oldest airlines comes from the Balkans. Jat Airways, the national airline of Serbia, is a direct successor of Aeroput and JAT, the later being communist Yugoslavia's flag-carrier, until the nation's disintegration in the early 1990s. Having barely survived the collapse of the country and the Balkan wars of the 1990s, JAT changed its name to Jat Airways. It is now struggling to rejuvenate its outdated fleet in order to become as successful as it was in the 1980s.
