Georgia is a small state of four million people and has an army of around 17,000 men, supported by a Georgian Air Force (GAF) with some nine combat-capable Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoots and nine Mil Mi-24 Hind attack helicopters. Notwithstanding that Russia has an army of 360,000, plus an air force with around 4,000 aircraft, the Georgian Government decided to launch a massive artillery attack on Tskhinvali, capital of the South Ossetia enclave with its many Russian citizens, on the evening of August 7. The Russian response was swift, not least because troops of the North Caucasus military command had been preparing for this scenario for the previous two years.
