Initiated in November 1996, the C-295 was unveiled at the Paris Air Show on June 16, 1997, launched unilaterally by CASA as a stretched and modernised version of the CN-235 developed in partnership with IPTN (now Dirgantara) of Indonesia. Market surveys had indicated a need for a mid-sized (sub-Lockheed C-130) short-field transport to replace such ageing types as the DH Canada Caribou and Buffalo, and the addition of this third member to its portfolio was a logical step. The 9ft 71/4in (3m) stretch added three fuselage frames forward of the wing and another three aft, plus a larger, strengthened wing to support hardpoints for weapons or other stores. The main undercarriage was reinforced to withstand an immediate landing at maximum weight in the event of an aborted take-off; twin nosewheels were introduced to improve operation from unpaved airstrips; and fuselage pressurisation was raised to 5.581b/sq in (0.38bar) from the 3.61b/sq in (0.25bar) of the CN-235, enabling the 8,000ft (2,440m) cabin environment to be sustained to 25,000ft (7,620m) instead of 18,000ft (5,485m). New engines were accompanied by increased fuel capacity, and provision was provided for an optional in-flight refuelling probe. As with the CN-235, a maritime patrol/anti-submarine warfare (MPA/ASW) Persuader version was also offered.
