Subtitled The Untold Story of the First Heroes of the Air, this book is a wonderful compilation of first-hand accounts from individuals who experienced the challenges of flight leading up to and during World War One. Joshua Levine has uncovered a wealth of previously unpublished stories and presents them in a frank and open manner. They reveal the feelings of the men who defended the trenches from the air, many of whom flew their first combat missions with extremely little flying experience, no proven tactics and without parachutes. Some of their aircraft were inherently unstable, underpowered, and carried minimal defensive armament.
