VASTLY REDUCED air passenger numbers, mounting losses and uncertain future demand due to the C0VID-19 pandemic means many airlines have removed older, less efficient aircraft. Perhaps the most potent symbol so far of coronavirus' impact on commercial aviation is Air France withdrawing its entire Airbus A380 fleet from service with immediate effect in May 2020. Air France-KLM Group said: "Initially scheduled by the end of 2022, the phase-out of A380 fleet fits in the group fleet simplification strategy of making the fleet more competitive, by continuing its transformation with more modern, high-performance aircraft with a significantly reduced environmental footprint." Five of Air France's super jumbos are owned by the carrier and four are on operating leases. The financial impact of the A380 phase-out write down is estimated at €500 million and will be booked in the second quarter of 2020 as a non-current cost/expenses, the airline said.
