BOMBARDIER AVIATION handed over the first Global 5500 on June 24, following outfitting at Wichita in Kansas. The manufacturer has not identified the recipient of the large business jet. The interior of the delivered aircraft was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Global 5500 was developed alongside the 6500 from the 5000 and 6000 respectively, powered by 15,100lb st (67kN) Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 turbofans. The new duo also has redesigned wings, produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan (which recently assumed control of Bombardier's CRJ programme), plus improvements to the Vision flight deck based on Collins Aerospace Pro Line Fusion avionics with an overlay infrared and synthetic terrain imagery in a combined vision system. The Global 5500 and 6500 also have redesigned cabin fixtures and amenities. Bombardier introduced the pair in May 2018, with the Global 6500 entering service in December 2019. The Global 5500 has a range of 5,900nm (10,927km), which is 200nm (370km) above that originally targeted, but 700nm (1,296km) less than that of the Global 6500. The Global 5500 has a 40ft 9in (12.42m) long cabin, which is 7ft 11in (2.41m) wide and 6ft 2in (1.88m) high, and can seat up to 16 passengers in a generic configuration. Outfitting of Global 5000 family aircraft transferred from Montreal in Ontario, Canada, to Wichita in 2019 to free space for work on the Global 7500, the largest and longest-range member of Bombardier's business jet portfolio.
