Antarctica is the coldest, harshest and most isolated continent on the planet, yet each year nine pilots of the British Antarctic Survey spend six months flying in this inhospitable environment. They use four de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters and a Dash 7 which are based there for the summer season from mid-October to mid-March.rnA lack of navigation and approach aids means that most of the flying has to be VFR. In winter, the lack of daylight (there are three months of total darkness) and extreme weather means flying operations are halted. To capitalise on this forced down-time the aircraft are flown up to the Northern hemisphere for major maintenance work, which is currently undertaken by Field Aviation in Calgary, Canada.
