Only a truly global event like the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup or the Olympic Games can generate enough demand to produce thousands of charter flights for a sporting occasion. However, while the Olympic Games are primarily concentrated around a single host city, the FIFA World Cup is usually spread between the length and breadth of the host nation. This was certainly true of the footballing spectacular staged in Germany between June 9 and July 9, 2006, where no less than 12 cities hosted matches, leading to an influx of charter flights carrying players, officials and supporters. While Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart all have their own international airports to handle the extra passengers generated by this event, the host cities of Gelsenkirchen and Kaiserslautern do not. As a result, traffic for those destinations was routed primarily via Dortmund and Saarbruecken respectively.
