Passenger traffic in Europe and the United States is starting to recover from a slump caused by the 2001 terrorist attacks, SARS, the Iraqi conflict and an economic downturn. Eryl Crump considers how four diverse airports are coping with the growth in traffic. Regional airports in Europe have traditionally fed passengers into the major hubs and handled charter flights to summer holiday resorts or winter sports destinations. The situation in the United States is similar, but with greater emphasis on hub traffic and less dependence on charter flights. In both Europe and North America, corporate aviation and general aviation operations are generally encouraged, with ready availability of hangarage and maintenance facilities, plus separate handling services for the executive traveller.
