摘要

Arguably the McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) FA-18 Hornet has been the most important tactical fighter of the post Cold War world. The Hornet was always intended to be a versatile, flexible, deployable and economic multi-role strike fighter, with a ground-breaking 'swing role' capability that allows the aircraft to go from one role to another during the course of a single mission. If a bomb-toting Hornet is bounced by enemy fighters en route to the target, its pilot can transform his aircraft into one of the world's most formidable beyond visual range fighters at the touch of a single button. Having dealt with the threat, the pilot can return to the bomber role with another button press. The Hornet has fought in every major war involving US forces and the type has often been used in larger numbers than any other fast jet. In recent operations. the original F/A-18A/C/D Hornet has been augmented by the newer F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. sometimes affectionately known as the 'Super Bug'.
