In the race to be the first company to bring a light jet to market, Rod Simpson believes that all the indications point to the winner being Adam Aircraft. While the core aircraft under development by Colorado-based Adam Aircraft is a piston-engined twin, the remarkable fact remains that this young company will soon deliver not one, but two, new personal/business aircraft designs, including the twin-turbofan A700. ADAM Aircraft has advanced rapidly through a combination of careful planning, innovative design, a unique approach to organisation and working practices, and a very clear understanding of the principal niche which has opened up in general aviation. This is the niche, vacated by Cessna, Piper and Raytheon during the crisis which transformed the general aviation industry in the 1980s. Ever since the Cessna 310 and Piper Apache introduced 'twin-engined reliability' in the 1950s, the bigger manufacturers had offered a comprehensive fleet of business piston twins - with increasingly sophisticated features, including pressurisation. These ranged from the Cessna 340 and Beech Duke, introduced in the late 1960s and priced in the $300,000 (?200,000) range, to the larger Cessna Golden Eagle and Beech Queen Air 88, with a $500,000 (?340,000) price tag.
