British Airways announced a sharp rise in profits for the last three months of 2003, making a pre-tax profit of ￡125m ($212.5m) - up from ￡25m ($42.5m) on the same quarter a year previously and exceeding City forecasts by ￡100m ($170m). Analysts see the figures as promising, despite warnings from senior airline officers that future reservations are weak in view of the perceived terrorist threat at the turn of the year which led to the cancellation at short notice of a number of inter-continental flights, principally to the USA and Middle East. The figures are also considered good in view of the fact that British Airways is continuing its painful restructuring under the 'Future Size and Shape' programme first announced by Chief Executive Rod Eddington early in 2002. In the two years since that announcement, British Airways has cut more than 12,600 jobs and adopted the online ticketing tactics used by its budget-priced rivals. A further 4,000 jobs could go as the airline seeks to cut its costs by a further ￡300m ($510m) before the end of this year.
