Half a century after flying the first of more than 11,000 commercial jetliners, Boeing has come full circle. From being a poor relation flying at Number 3 in the turbulent wake behind Lockheed and Douglas, the company climbed to an altitude of pre-eminence. Jet Stratoliner - the 707's original marketing tag-line - did not seem an over-stated metaphor as the US manufacturer overhauled first Lockheed and much more recently McDonnell Douglas, but concerted European efforts over the past 25 years have grabbed Boeing's global lead. reviews 50 years of progress since the Model 367-80 first flew. With energetic marketing of the recently-launched 7E7 Dreamliner, Boeing's Commercial Airplanes Division is working hard to regain credibility after a number of setbacks in recent years that saw the departure of a chief executive and rejected take-off of a new, faster airliner. Launch of the 7E7 is likely to be followed in the next ten years by a successor to the highly successful 737 series and some indication, finally, of how (not if) Boeing will replace the 747. For the moment, the company is preparing to end production of the 757 and 767 models just about as simultaneously as it conducted their development in the mid-1970s.
