These days, you have to search hard for the Skunk at the Skunk Works. The famous cartoon creature can still be found - on a sign inside the entrance to the Advanced Development Projects (ADP) building at Palmdale and on the business cards of ADP's senior managers. However, the Skunk Works' famous 'basic operating rules' devised by Kelly Johnson are nowhere to be seen. They are no longer relevant, according to Lockheed Martin. All this is a far cry from the last decade when the Skunk Works was riding high on the success of the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter and all that had gone before. ADP was even enshrined as a separate company - Lockheed Advanced Development Company, later renamed the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. Now ADP is only one among various Lockheed Martin activities at Palmdale. It employs less than a quarter of the workforce there and no longer has its own profit-and-loss responsibility.
