A military-inspired campaign against the Antonov An-70 transport aircraft has gained momentum in Russia. It was initiated in January this year by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Federation Air Force (RFAF), Colonel General Vladimir Mikhailov, who declared during a press conference in Moscow that the An-70 is an underdeveloped project, and the aircraft is dangerous in operation, too heavy and too expensive. A less obvious, but still acrimonious, reaction to the An-70 by the RFAF management had begun to surface some months earlier and since February last year Russia had ceased to finance the An-70 project. Russian military experts were withdrawn from the aircraft's test programme, which then had to be virtually suspended. Moreover, the Polyot assembly plant in Omsk did not receive the 10 million roubles ($3.1 million) it was owed for work completed in 2002 to prepare for the An-70's series production.
