The extreme conditions found in Afghanistan have tested the very best defence assets and the Westland Lynx AH9 was no different in this respect. The heat and sand, coupled with the geography, ultimately took its toll on the AH9 and its engine. One senior member of the Lynx project team responsible for making future modifications told AIR International: "The Gem engine [Rolls-Royce Gem 42 turboshaft engine] performance hadn't got what's required for [the Afghanistan] theatre." Urgent action was needed to improve the aircraft's operational performance and reliability.
