China has flown a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned air system. The Sunward Technology Star-lite SVU200 undertook a 20-minute flight after a number of preliminary short test hops, during which it performed several take-offs and landings, sideways and backwards manoeuvring, forward cruise flight and turns. It also lifted a 200kg (4411b) cargo. Full autonomous flight testing is due to begin shortly. The aircraft has been designed by an American designer, Dennis Fetters, who lives in China, and is intended to carry weapons as well as sensors up to a maximum load of 244kg (5371b).
