UK firm QinetiQ has undertaken wind tunnel testing on the new Boeing 737 MAX. The company's dedicated wind tunnel research team began the tests at its Farnborough, Hampshire, facility in February, focusing on the MAX's low-speed performance on takeoff and landing. QinetiQ has previously undertaken similar tests in its 16ft (5m) wind tunnel for the 787 Dreamliner, 747-8, 777 and 737 Next Generation. The tests were part of Boeing's work to develop the MAX's specification, which will be presented to customers later this year ahead of an expected design freeze in 2013. Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Jim Albaugh said during the Singapore Airshow in February that Boeing's target this year was to convert all the existing commitments for the MAX into firm orders as it defines the aircraft's specifications. The company aims to have "a couple of thousand" firm orders for the aircraft by the time it flies.
