The overall structure of the Armee de I'Air's frontline maintenance recently underwent sweeping changes which saw the creation of dedicated engineering units for combat and transport aircraft. "Our absolute priority is to have, at all times, the largest amount of aircraft available for combat operations," noted General Palomeros. "This is the reason why we always look for better ways to optimise the whole maintenance system. In the early 2000s, we suffered from a sudden fall in aircraft availability caused by a chronic lack of investment in the late 1990s, due to budget problems. The equation to solve this type of problem within a given budget is certainly not easy: if we want a very good availability rate for combat operations and for aircraft stationed in our forward operating bases - in Djibouti, Chad and the UAE-we have to devote resources that will not be available anymore for other aircraft, and this could well have a detrimental impact on the training of young pilots at home.
