When most people think of amphibious operations, they think of the island hopping campaigns of World War Two or possibly the Falkland Islands. But history has taught us that whenever you cut a certain part of the military, that will be the time it is needed the most. After a decade of war, in two mostly land-locked countries of Iraq and Afghanistan, the US Marine Corps realised it needed to show the decision-makers that it was not the United States' second army. Exercise Bold Alligator illustrated that amphibious warfare is still a competency not forgotten by the Marine Corps. Staged from January 30 to February 12, 2012, the US Marine Corps, the US Navy and the forces of ten other nations conducted the largest amphibious exercise in more than a decade.
