Ukrainian Air Force commander Lieutenant General Yuriy Baidak stated in a press report published by the Ministry of Defence that his country intends to upgrade and overhaul 86 combat aircraft and helicopters within five years. According to the commander, a fleet of 12 aircraft, including Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrums, Sukhoi Su-27 Flankers and Aero L-39 Albatros, have been modernised and are operational. The service is currently undertaking preparations for the overhaul and repair of its Ilyushin II-76MD Candid transport aircraft with the first upgraded example expected to be operational by the end of the year. The II-76MD fleet is expected to serve until 2030 and will be replaced by the Antonov An-70, being jointly developed by Russia and Ukraine.
