Squadron Leader Jim Schofield ferried Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II ZM136 (BK-2) to Eglin AFB, Florida from Fort Worth, Texas, on October 19. The aircraft joins the first UK F-35B (ZM135, BK-1) at the base, where it has been taking part in the operational test and evaluation process since July 23. ZM136 was welcomed at Eglin by the first class of RAF and Royal Navy maintenance personnel attending courses at the F-35 Academic Training Center. The UK aircraft are embedded within Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 Warlords' (VMFAT-501) administered by Marine Air Group 31 but operationally controlled by the 33rd Fighter Wing of the US Air Force. An RAF and a Royal Navy pilot will shortly begin instructor training on the Lightning II, the first international pilots to do so, while assembly of a further three F-35Bs for the UK is under way at Fort Worth.
