When the CAA was amended in 1970, Congress directed EPA to develop, and periodically review and update (if necessary), numerical standards for major pollutants of concern. There are currently national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for six pollutants. The six pollutants, known as criteria pollutants because the standards are determined using health-based criteria, are: Ozone, Carbon monoxide, Paniculate matter, Nitrogen dioxide, Sulfur oxides (measured as sulfur dioxide [SOJ), and Lead.
