Estimation of CO concentrations for an urban street canyon in Ireland

In most European cities, traffic is the most important source of air pollution, with the highest ambient concentrations often found on streets in urban centres. Vehicular pollution dispersion models are therefore essential computational tools for predicting the impacts of emissions from road traffic. These include models for evaluating air quality in street canyons, where the existence of a recirculating vortex leads to unique pollutant transport and dispersion conditions. In this context, two urban street canyon models, namely STREET and Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM), were investigated at Pearse Street, an important traffic route in the centre of Dublin city. Previous validation exercises of these models particularly the OSPM has been carried out in continental Europe which has relatively deep canyon characteristics with aspect ratio (H/W) greater than 1. The performance of these models for low street canyons with aspect ratio less than 1 has rarely been reported. As such, this present study reports the results obtained whilst applying these models for a low street canyon in Dublin, Ireland.
