A critical review of emissions estimation techniques for four international shipping port studies

International shipping is an important part of global trade and economies worldwide and is estimated to be responsible for 90% of international trade. Considering a large proportion of ship emissions occur within proximity to land (while ships are manoeuvring and at berth) where sensitive receptors reside, there is a need to quantify port emissions in the interest of human health. This paper describes emission inventory estimation techniques used in four air emissions studies for major shipping ports in Western Australia and the United Arab Emirates (Fremantle Ports and Abu Dhabi Ports). The four studies use a combination of fuel consumption information (Tier 2 approach), ship movement data (Tier 3 approach) and several assumptions to estimate port shipping emissions. A description of each estimation technique and review of assumptions used in each study is provided. Estimated port emissions are compared between the studies highlighting the need for accurate ship movement and ship technical data as input into the emission calculations.
