"True Crime: Pan Am Flight 7" (Feb./ Mar. 2017) reminded me of an incident from the early 1950s, when I was stationed with the U.S. Air Force at Haneda Air Force Base, just outside of Tokyo. I was an air traffic controller on an overnight watch. Early in my shift, I received notice from staff at the Tokyo air traffic control center that they were in contact with a Pan Am Clipper inbound to Haneda; the aircraft had engine trouble, but the crew was still in control. A little while later we learned that the engine had separated from the aircraft and dropped into the ocean. It was a very anxious time, though I was impressed with the crew's calm and cool manner under such extreme conditions. Shortly after dawn, the aircraft arrived and landed without incident. I watched the very relieved passengers disembark, and many knelt and kissed the ground. The empty engine mount received inspection; it was an eerie sight.
