摘要

Your Q & A with Robert 0. Harder (Air & Space Interview, June/July 2016) reminded me of an encounter I had with Paul Tibbets many years ago. I was a member of the Air line Pilots Association National Accident Investigation Board, and was invited to speak at an Embry-Riddle/Eastern Air Lines Safety Seminar at which Mr. Tibbets was also a speaker. During a short break, I observed Paul standing alone at the rear of the auditorium, so I went back to meet him. We talked, and he told me an interesting story. He said that whenever he went to parties, he always tried to just get his drink and find a place to hide, because all anyone wanted to talk about was "the bomb." One night, when he was standing alone at a party, a Japanese gentleman walked up to him, stuck out his hand, and said, "Hi, I'm Mitsuo Fuchida, want to talk about it?" Fuchida was the pilot who led the raid on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. So here was the pilot who started the war in the Pacific shaking hands with the pilot who effectively ended it. Mr. Tibbets said that they had a very nice conversation.
