Fifty years later, Mariner 2 is still out there. On December 14,1962, the NASA probe became the first spacecraft to encounter another planet. After a journey of more than 100 days and some 65 million miles, it flew by Venus, spending about 42 minutes scanning the planet's surface and atmosphere. From Mariner's encounter, scientists learned that the surface of Venus is a blistering 797 degrees Fahrenheit - and that the planet rotates clockwise, the opposite of Earth, Mars, and other planets.
