Last june, a Royal Air Force Museum team hoisted the remains of a Domier Do 17Z bomber from the English Channel, where it had lain since it was shot down on August 26,1940, during the Battle of Britain. The bomber was discovered in 2008 at a depth of 50 feet; the museum spent three years planning the retrieval.Two crew members died; the othertwo, including the pilot, later became prisoners of war. The bomber, originally designed as a reconnaissance aircraft, will be restored and displayed at the museum's London site, with a Hawker Hurricane that was also shot down during the legendary battle. The first step in its conservation is a bath in citric acid and sodium hydroxide to halt corrosion.
