Canada's Alouette, the first satellite built by a country other than the United States or the Soviet Union, was launched into orbit on September 29.1962. The scientific spacecraft was designed to study the effects of the ionosphere's electrically charged atoms on radio signals in the Canadian north, where disruptions are especially severe. The 320-pound Alouette, dispatched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California atop a Thor-Aqena B rocket, carried extra batteries that enabled it to transmit data for 10 years, far longer than expected. Its success helped establish the Canadian space industry, which built the robotic arms for the space shuttle and the Internationa! Space Station.
