The European Union's recent rules on aircraft noise threaten U.S. aviation exports, ignore international standards, and amount to a declaration of trade war. As we approach the end of a century that has been defined as much by our ties to Europe as by our cold war with Russia, we find ourselves in a new conflict. The U.S. aerospace industry has become a target of European protectionism and is bracing for a fight. The Europeans say it is a fight over aircraft noise; we believe it is a fight over a free market.
