ATW's Value Airline of the Year is changing the way leisure flyers approach air travel. In many cases, its main competitors are not other airlines, but the bus or automobile. Spirit Airlines was the first ultra low-cost carrier in the US and it has untapped a demand for a market that wants the very best deal. For some families, Spirit has provided the first-ever opportunity for them to fly to a vacation destination or to visit relatives rather than spend hours on the road.
