Wichita aerostructures giant Spirit AeroSystems is taking advantage of the historic gutting of commercial aircraft production due to the COVID-19 pandemic to reset its manufacturing capabilities permanently, so the future will look less populated by workers, more productive and, above all, profitable. The company is making several changes it has eyed-or eventually wanted to make-in a much quicker fashion, potentially turning its labor-intensive, 20th-century-style factories into modern marvels of digitally driven lean manufacturing centers. The results-although at the cost of far fewer workers in the midterm-should position Spirit to ride the resurgence of Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies and is increasingly attracting Wall Street's attention. "While challenging, the reduced production rates created an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate productivity and efficiency projects that would have been nearly impossible at higher production rates," Spirit CEO and President Tom Gentile says. "Our vision is to be a diversified design and manufacturing champion."
