Copa Airlines CEO Pedro Heilbron said Venezuela appears to be slowly moving toward repatriating money owed to airlines. The situation is "not getting worse," he said in mid-November at the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) Airline Leaders Forum in Nassau, Bahamas. IATA estimated in July that $4.1 billion was owed to airlines operating to/from Venezuela. The Venezuela government wanted airlines to accept funds repatriated at a steeply discounted exchange rate, an offer the industry has rejected. Flight capacity to/from the South American nation has been cut, with Panama-based Copa-which had high exposure in Venezuela-slashing capacity to the country by 50% for the second half of 2014.
