Southeast Asia's biggest budget carrier, AirAsia Berhad, has tied up with Indian business conglomerate Tata Group to launch a new airline in India. AirAsia has applied to India's Foreign Investment Promotion Board to take 49% in the venture with Tata Sons and a third investor-partner, Arun Bhatia. The new budget carrier will increase competition in the Indian skies, where most airlines are losing money. In September 2012, the Indian government amended its foreign direct investment rules, allowing foreign airlines to buy up to 49% equity in Indian carriers. This transac tion would be the first such deal in India. Former Tata Group chairman Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata in 1932 launched Air India, which was later nationalized by the Indian government. The group, owners of Jaguar Land Rover luxury vehicles, will have 30% stake in the venture. The partners will seek an air operator's permit after the government clears the application, AirAsia said in a statement to the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange. The airline will operate from Chennai and will provide domestic connectivity to smaller cities. According to Indian regulations, a carrier must complete five years of domestic operations before it is eligible to launch overseas flights. AirAsia, through its operations based in Thailand and Malaysia, flies to Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Tiruchirappalli and Kolkata, in addition to 20 countries in Asia.
